Title

Cherbourg, Palm Island - Rugby League - Brisbane - 1951 April

Description

Brisbane Telegraph (Qld) 30 April 1951: 12
Rugby League match between Palm Island and Cherbourg to be played on consecutive nights in Brisbane and then Ipswich on the 3rd and 4th of May as a part of the Jubilee Festival. Boxers from Cherbourg, Palm Island and Woorabinda settlements will also clash. There is mention that the Department of Native Affairs are bring down 'Aborigines' from the Torres Strait. No comment on what it is they will be doing.
Three thousand people watched Torres Strait Islanders in an effective flood-lit open air display of dancing and other items at the Exhibition Grounds last night. An impressive war dance by massed island groups formed the climax, and another feature was an inter-settlement Rugby League match, won by Palm Island from Cherbourg, 31-11. Palm Island had a slight advantage because their opponents were playing in bare feet for the first time in 20 years. To-day's return match at Ipswich will be in football boots.
Brisbane Telegraph (Qld) 10 April 1951: 14
More than 120 aborigines from four settlements in Queensland and Torres Strait will come to Brisbane for the Jubilee celebration week. Brief run down of events.
