Letter 19 November 1943 from DNA to Supers of C, PI and W seeking 15 boxers in total for a contest in Brisbane v Australian Army boxers. No date suggested, but later corr says this would be in January 1944. Is esp interested in [George] Hayden from Woor and [George] Sibley from PI. Handwritten note on this says boxing has ‘lapsed somewhat’ on PI due to ‘younger men being away cane cutting’.

10 December 1943 Woor nominates George Heydon [sic], Jack Tiers, Keith Punch, Stan Darkan and Darcy Richardson.

Memo 20 December 1943 from DNA to Cherb Super saying that boxing gloves will be sent to Cherbourg, with payment to be charged to the CH Sports Fund.

Memo 5 January 1944 from Ch Super to DNA naming 13 men possible candidates for the Brisbane Army fights. Most are listed as ‘Fairymead’, which was a sugar farm in the Bundaberg Region. COPIED

It is unclear whether this tournament in Brisbane was held and who went. Woorabinda had to withdraw its boxers due to illness and labour shortages.
