The Yarrabah School Sports were held on 3rd May, 1962. The Mirob cup was won by Koala House. This was a good rehearsal for the inter-school sports in Cairns. The parents bought materials and made new uniforms for the team. Colours chosen were red, gold, and black. The school made a success of the day by winning the boys’ shield and the Senior Girls’ picture trophy. Darryl Sexton, Stafford Murgha, and Alvena Yeatman, were the outstanding athletes for Yarrabah. Stafford and Alvena had successes in the Far Northern Championships held on 7th July in Cairns.

Report on school sport in Yarrabah 1961-62, includes: "The Head Teacher had the pleasure of taking three promising runners to Cairns on 9th September. Success was achieved but the stop-watch ordained that times were not good enough to warrant a trip to Brisbane".

Welfare Association: "Together with the assisting of various functions, the Association ran a two day sports to mark the Anniversary of both the Church foundation and the take-over of the Department which closely coincides [takeover occurred 1 July]. The sports were a great success and very complimentary”.

“Recreation and Entertainment: Hunting in the heavy scrub belt along the coast takes up the main free time of most men during the weekends. Fishing also along coast to augment variety in diet. Privately owned small boats go out to the reef for Trochus fishing etc.
Rugby Football is the favourite ball game, but it is hard to hold interest for a full season.
Cricket is spasmodic as a team game.
Native Dancing ‘Island’ variety and true Abo
riginal style of dancing is the main entertainment. Excellent shows were put on at Christmas and the New Year”.
