Description of the current (at 1933) status of Indigenous Australians, focussing on the Queensland givernment settlements. Includes comments on athletic ability:
"They are naturally an athletic race and every facility is placed at their disposal for the promotion of heathful sport. Football, tennis, cricket, foot-racing, and all the white man's forms of recreation find a ready place in the daily, routine of the aboriginal settlements".

"The Brisbane secretary of the Australian Board of Missions (Miss Houssmann) states that 50 cases, the majority of which are 3 feet by 2 foot by 2 feet, have been despatched from Brisbane for the Torres Straits, Solomon Islands, New Guinea, Japan, China, Fiji, Yarrabah, Leichhardt River, and Mitchell River districts and in addition parcels have been posted to event missionary In Melanesia...."
"Included in the assortment of gifts are tennis balls, footballs, and basket-balls. These are welcomed with outstretched hands, and great fun Is derived by kicking the balls along the beaches. The basket balls are for the girls, and they revel in throwing them around; it is good, vigorous exercise, and an ideal winter pastime for them".

A tennis court is being made, and gifts of tennis, cricket, football, or other sporting material would be greatly appreciated. These may be left care of the Yarrabah Committee, Church House, Ann street. The girls at Yarrabah are enthusiastic players of basket ball, and have some excellent teams. There is also an organisation of Girl Guides and Brownies, who wear the regulation uniforms made by themselves. There is also a brass band of 20 performers. A present of a gramophone and records would be particularly welcome.

Daniel Murgha won a "major boxing title" in Brisbane in early May 1982 and was selected for the Oceanic titles in New Zealand in late May 1982 (see separate entry re NZ).

Memo 8/6/79 from Y Manager to Director DAIA re request to slaughter a bullock for Annual Sports Day on 16-17 June.
Follow up [14/6/79] saying it wouldn’t comply with new butchering standards. A 2nd follow-up dated 31/8/79 notes that 2 bullocks were butchered and requests more info – file ends.

Letter 17/9/71 from DD Tallon, principal of Y State School, to Mr Hewitt (?) and Killoran (DAIA) informing him of Leurlene Yeatman’s athletic achievements as a Yr 7 girl. At Cairns District Sports she won every event she entered – 100m, 200m, high and broad jump, shot put and relays. She repeated this at the Far North Q Champs, except for shot put in which she placed 2nd. Selected to rep FNQ at State Champs in Brisbane 7-8 October in 100m, 200m, shot put and relay. Letter of congrats to LY from Director dated 1/10/71.

"There was a good attendance last evening at the Shire Hall to witness the original programme by the Yarrabah boys, headed by Douglas Pitt [and supported by his brother]". Events included drill dancing and football dancing, with singing in the Darnley Island dialect, and cricket dancing with singing in the Murray Island language.

250 pupils at Yarrabah school. Another 50 travel to school in Cairns by launch daily. Teachers and staff busy with football, basketball, fife band and a girls’ club. Three house sports teams. Gained 2nd place in Cairns interschool comp in 1966.

Yarrabah won basketball honours in inter-school competition and in inter-school athletics in Cairns – Carmel Bounghi won 1st in high jump and Emily Canuto came 2nd in sprints.
